he is suggesting that the morning shows were less brutal than the afternoon ones, and that the spectators are more bloodthirsty than the lions in the arena

killers about to be killed - this is paradoxical as usually killers would be the ones murdering, not the other way around

the victor - because there are no victors at the midday shows, everyone will eventually end up dead
