For EO exam, after introducing yourself to the pt, what is the first thing to ask a pt?
Ask pt if they have experienced any pain/swelling around the head/neck area
Visually, what are you looking for in EO examination?
- soft tissue lesions - face, vermillion border, perioral
- signs of ill health
- symmetry (in front, behind and above the pt)
When assessing MoM, what are you looking for?
Tenderness or spasm
What lymph nodes should be palpated?
o Palpate cheeks and parotid glands
o Examine submental region (lymph nodes)
o Examine submandibular triangle (submandibular glands and lymph nodes)
o Palpate tissuesof neck against thumbs and muscles (any lumps?)
o Palpate theposterior triangle
• palpate cervical nodes
How do you assess TMJ and mandibular opening?
- assess extent of opening of mandible
- assess any deviation on opening and closing
- ask pt to move jaw side to side (lateral movement) and assess any sounds/ path of movement
What can MoM tell you?
- can refer pain to other locations in the head
* can indicate parafunctional habit
How do you check the cervical lymph nodes?
Ask pt to turn their head away from the side you are testing to move sternocleidomastoid muscle out of the way
How do you check submental lymph nodes?
Tilt pts head forward and roll nodes along lower border of mandible
What else should you look for EO?
skin cancers
• basal cell carcinoma (look red/pink with irregular blood vessels)
–> ask how long its been there and if it hurts
–> if so refer to oral surgery
