Extra Notes Flashcards
What does Cochranes GRADE stand for
Grade
Recommendation and
Assessment
Development and
Education
What are 5 things that can lower GRADE ( cochrane grade )
High or unclear risk of bias
Hetrogenecity
Indirectness
Imprescision
Publication bias
What is the purpose systematic review
Collect secondary date, critally appraise the data and synthesise studies
What are the 5 components of a systematic review
- Well formulated question
- Comprehensive data search
- Unbiased selection and abstraction process
- Assessment of papers
- Synthesis of data
What is meta analysis
Process of using statistical methods to combine results of different studies
Increases in precision and power
When assessing papers what are 5 things that must be looked at when assessing the risk of bias
Sequence generation
Allocation concealment
Blinding
Incomplete outcome data
Selective outcome reporting
How does the DAHL concept work in toothwear
Covers palatal surfaces and allows occlusion on a raised cingulum - resulting in posterior disocclusion,
Over a period of 3-6 months the posteriors erupt and the incisors intrude causing an increased OVD.
This results in a space between the upper and lower anteriors allowing restorations with no need for occlusal reduction.
Name 5 contraindications for the DAHL treatment
Active periodontal disease
TMJ problems - this may exacerbate it
Patient on bisphosphonates treatment - poor bone turnover
Dental implants present
Conventional bridges present
What should be the first stage of treatment in any patient with toothwear
Passive management - prevention and monitoring
Most patients in practice will be in this phase for 6 months
Define Erosion
The loss of tooth surface by a chemical process that DOES NOT involve bacterial action
Chronic exposure to acid by the dental hard tissues which can be intrinsic or extrinsic
Define abfraction
The loss of hard tissue from eccentric occlusal forces leading to comprehensive and tensile stresses at the cervical fulcrum of the tooth
Define abrasion
The physical wear of tooth substance through an abnormal mechanical process independent of occlusion.
It involves a foreign object - i.e a toothbrush
Define atttrion
The physiological wearing away of the tooth structure as a result of tooth-tooth contact
Flat facets on occlusal and incisal contacting surfaces
