Extra Martin Skeletal Muscle Path Flashcards
2 main responses of peripheral nerves to injury?
Segmental demyelination
Atonal demyelination
2 principle pathological processes seen in muscle?
Enervation atrophy
Myopathy
What is onion bulb on histo?
Concentric layers of Schwann cytoplasm
What is a traumatic neuroma?
When an axon is trying to reinnervate its target and it doesn’t make it and creates a nodule basically.
Two types of denervated fibers?
Angulated and target
What determines the fiber type of a muscle fiber?
The motor neuron
If you were to stain for muscle fiber type in a normal muscle before denervation and after what would it look like?
Normal checkerboard appearance.
Type grouping because an unaffected motor unit has innervated the fibers and all those fibers are the same type.
4 main pathologic reactions of a muscle fiber?
Segmental necrosis
Vacuolization
Regeneration
Hypertrophy and fiber splitting
