Q

What 4 factors can be considered important when considering liquid pressure?

A
  • Pressure in a liquid increases with depth
  • Pressure at a particular depth acts equally in all directions
  • Pressure depends on the density of the liquid
  • A liquid finds its own level

Q

Explain why the can collapses when cooled rapidly after heating .

A

Before heating the can is filled with water and air, during heating water changes from liquid to gas (water vapor) while that is happening water vapor pushes the air out into the atmosphere, during condensation it takes less space in the can therefore this small amount of liquid cannot exert much pressure on the can, therefore the atmospheric pressure is greater than the pressure in the can, (equilibrium) causes the can to crush.
