What to remember about electron dot diagrams (ionic compounds)
- positive ions = no electrons are shown
- negative ions = full electrons as they have been gained to attain a full shell
- include charges outside brackets
- if numbers are needed to balance, place at bottom, outside of brackets
define dissociation
when solid ionic compounds dissolve in water, lattice of ions breaks apart into independent monatomic ions
Eg of dissociation equation:
NaCl(s) –> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
in ionic bonding what do metal atoms do
lose e- form cations
in ionic bonding what do non metal atoms do
gain e- form anions
what are 5 properties of acids
- Taste sour
- Are corrosive (burn skin)
- Release at least one hydrogen ion (H+)
- Conduct electricity
- Turn blue litmus paper red
