Extinction, Fossils and Natural Selection Flashcards
Extinction
The complete disappearance of a species from Earth
Natural Selection
Process where organisms better adapted to their environment survive to breed and pass on their genes
Fossils
The remains or impression of a prehistoric plant or animal embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form
Three types of fossils
Impression fossils
Preserved Organisms
Mineral Replacement
How are Preserved Organisms made?
Small animals and plant matter sometimes become caught in resin as it is secreted from trees. The resin hardens to become amber leaving the organism preserved.
What is mineral replacement
An animal dies and is buried by sediment. The sediment around the skeleton thickens and begins to turn to stone. The skeleton dissolves creating a mould in which minerals crystallise inside of. This creates a fossil which is then exposed to the earths surface. `
Causes of extinction
Environment changes quickly A new predator A new disease Competition with new species for food A catastrophic event
