External validity Flashcards
What is validity?
When a study measures what it claims to measure
What is external validity
A study has external validity when the results of the study generalise to other situations & people
What is internal validity
A study has internal validity when the study measures what it claims to measure and there are no extraneous variables
What are the 3 types of external validity?
- Ecological validity
- Temporal validity
- Population validity
What is ecological validity
Type of External validity
When results of a study generalise to how people behave in real life
e.g of study that lacks ecological validity:
Phil investigates childrens play behaviour by obderving how children play in unfamiliar laboratory with unfamiliar toys.
What is temporal validity
Type of external validity
A study has temporal validity when the results generalise across time
e.g of a study lacking temporal validity:
A study investigated peoples music taste in early 1800s,which showed a resounding music preference for mozart-lacks temporal validity because music taste has changed in past 100 years
What is population validity
When results of study generalise to whole population
