Q

How has the impact of feminism affected the achievement of girls according to McRobbie (1994)?

A

McRobbie notes the change of the perception of girls in magazines. In the 1970s, magazines promoted the idea of how to be a housewife. However, in the 1990s, this had changed to how women could access employment. Feminism brought on a genderquake. Positively impacts girls as it motivates them to be as successful as boys.

Q

How has changed to family life affected the achievement of girls?

A

The DRA (1969) has meant that 40% of marriages now end in divorce. As a result, it is more likely for girls to be raised in a single parent family (headed by mother). This is becoming more normal because of declined stigma also. Positively impacts girls as they see they do not need the financial support of men.

Q

How has the feminisation of the economy affected the achievement of girls?

A

Since the 1970s the feminisation of the economy has occurred due to the deindustrialisation of Britain.
The Equal Pay Act of 1970 and Sex Discrimination Act 1975 have allowed women to progress into the workforce. By 2013, 67% of all women were in paid employment.
Positively impacts girls as they see they can progress and have a career and having good grades and a GCSE in English and Maths can achieve this.

Q

How has the changing ambition of women affected the achievement of girls according to Sharpe (1994)?

A

Sussie Sharpe conducted a study in 1974 and 1994.
In 1974 she interviewed 16 year old girls and found that the vast majority of them wanted to find love and have kids. The thought of doing academically well didn’t sit well with them as it was masculinised
In 1994, she conducted the same study and found that the vast majority of 16 year olds wanted a job and career.
Could be due to the rise in individualisation

Q

How does poor literate among boys negatively affect the achievement of boys?

A

Evidence suggest that Boys are less likely to read for pleasure and play outdoors more. Girls are encouraged to pursue a bedroom culture in which they socialise indoors. This makes girls more likely more likely to read which positively impacts their literacy levels.
Negatively impacts the achievement as there lack of interest in reading acts as a barrier to exams

Q

How has the decline of traditional male jobs negatively impacted the achievement of boys?

A

Globalisation and neoliberal economy policies meant the coal, steal and manufacturing industries moved elsewhere in the world.
This led to a decline in manual labour, male dominated jobs in the U.K. has led to a crisis of masculinity for men. They no longer were the sole provider for families. This negatively impacts the achievement of boys as they are now growing up in a society that places value on them
