- leads to cultural cycle where students from low income families fail at school then become inadequate parents themselves
- SEWELL: sees the lack of ‘tough love’ the reason why black boys underachieve
- they join gangs for loyalty and love
- ARNOT: describes boys as ‘ultra tough ghetto superstar’ inspired by MTV ghetto culture
- leads to underachievement because speaking standard English and taking interest in education is seen as ‘selling out’
- GILBORN: it’s institutional racism that produces failure of large number of black boys
