Where are the middle and inner ear housed?
The petrous part of the temporal bone
What does the external ear consist of?
The auricle (pinna) and external auditory meatus
What is the auricle made of and what is its role?
Made of cartilage and covered by a layer of perichondrium and skin- its role is to collect sound
What type of cartilage is found in the pinna?
elastic
What is the external auditory meatus?
a passageway through which sound is conducted from the auricle to the tympanic membrane
What is the composition of the external auditory meatus?
outer third is cartilaginous (perichondrium and skin) inner two thirds is formed of bone covered with periosteum and skin
What does the skin in the external auditory meatus contain?
Hairs and ceruminous glands (in the subcutaneous tissue)
What do ceruminous glands do?
Secrete cerumen (ear wax)- along with the hairs this creates a sticky environment that traps foreign bodies
