External- Cultural Deprivation Flashcards
What are the two aspects of ethnic cultural deprivation?
- Intellectual and linguistic skills
2. Attitudes, family structure and parental support
What do some cultural deprivation theorists argue about black children from low income families?
They lack stimulation and enriching experiences which leaves them unprepared for school because they haven’t been able to develop cultural capital. However this is more likely to be due to class than ethnicity.
What do Bereiter and Engelmann argue about language spoken in low income black American families?
Acts as a barrier to success. However again, this may be suicidal class not ethnicity.
What kind of children is there a concern for? Why?
Those who don’t speak English at home as they might be held back educationally. However statistics don’t back this up showing the difference between EAL is constistently less than 3%.
What are the 4 types of family in attitudes, family structure and parental support?
Black families, Asian families, white working class families and Sewell: Fathers, gangs and culture.
Black Families- what do some cultural deprivation theorists argue cause underachievement?
A dysfunctional family and lack of parental support.
Black Families- what does Murray argue?
A high rate of material deprivation is associated with lone parenthood and a lack of male role models can lead to the underachievement of ethnic minorities, especially black Caribbean boys.
Black families- What does Pryce argue?
Also sees family structure as contributing to underachievement of black pupils in Britain. Pryce argues Asian culture is more resistant to racism than black Carribean culture due to differing impact or colonisation. He argues slavery was culturally devastating. They lost their language, family and entire family system (Asians didn’t).
What does Sewell say about Chinese and Indian families?
Black families have absent fathers but Indian and Chinese pupils benefit from supportive families that have an ‘Asian work ethic’ and place high value on education.
What does Lupton argue about Asian families?
Adult authority in Asian families is very similar to that at school. She found respectful behaviour is expected from children towards adults. This had a knock on effect at school as parents support school behaviour policies (socialisation into hierarchy).
What does MuCulloh argue about working class white families?
Ethnic minority students more likely to aspire to go to university than white working class students.
What did Lupton find about white working class students?
Studied four mainly WC schools and found teachers reported poorer levels of behaviour and discipline from white WC pupils along with lower levels of parental support in comparison o students and parents of ethnic minority.
What did Gillian Evans argue about white WC areas?
Street culture can be brutal so the WC learn how to withstand intimidation and intimidate others. School is a place where these power games are played and this might make it harder for them to succeed.
What did Sewell argue causes underachievement in Afro-Carribeans?
Afro Carribean culture. In 2001, he showed that 51% of Afro Carribean families were lone parents compared to 25% of white families. He argues that because they don’t have a male role model, they are more responsive to older boys and men- meaning they are more likely to join gangs (to restore self esteem after marginalisation in school). Gang culture sees education as effeminate so the boys fail. He also pointed out AC bots are diverse and only a minority join gangs- all have different strategies to deal with education.
Critisisms of ethnic cultural deprivation?- Driver
Criticises it for ignoring positive effects of ethnicity on achievement. For instance, the black Carribean family provides girls with positive role models of strong independent women.
