What main characteristics of vinyl and aluminum siding must you be aware of during installation?
Vinyl and aluminum siding are very sensitive to temperature changes and must be allowed to expand and contract
What must be done to horizontal joints in panel siding?
Horizontal joints must be lapped or have flashing installed
How many coats are applied for cement stucco wall?
3 coats
Where is flashing used?
Flashing is used at all horizontal joints of exterior components, except where the upper surface overlaps the lower
When is flashing installed?
Flashing is installed first so the building paper or house wrap that is installed over it will carry water onto the flashing
Why is soffit vented?
To allow air flow into the roof space
How high should exterior finishes be kept above finished grade?
200mm
How much space should be allowed for when cutting vinyl or aluminum siding panels that will meet windows, doors and corner post?
6mm (1/4”)
What are siding nails made of?
Aluminum, galvanised steel or stainless steel
How long should the nails be that are used for fastening vinyl siding to sheathing?
Long enough to penetrate the sheathing
When is undersill trim used?
Anytime the top or bottom locking strip has been removed
Where is the most common place to start installation of vertical siding?
Center of the wall
What must be done at joints between aluminum siding and brick?
Must be separated by a dividing material or by a space and caulking
What must be done to the footings if masonry veneer is applied to the walls above the footings?
Must be increased by 65mm (2 1/2”) for each storey
