Sex
Biological distinction, male or female, based on chromosomes, genitals
Gender
Refers to the meanings a culture attaches to those biological differences
Gender neutrality
Assumption that gender does not matter or that we are gender less, which results in the gender order being reproduced
Agents of socialization
Individuals and institutions that teach us the norms society
Differential Socialization
Teaching boys and girls/men and women different cultural norms, practices, and means of self expression
Biological essentialism
Belief that boys and girls/ men and women are different due to their different genetic make up and hormone compositions
Matrilinearly
Tracing family decent through a mothers bloodlines/ family
Binary
A concept or term defined by its opposite; as with masculinity and femininity
Sex segregation
Separation of men and women following industrialization; creating ideology of “separate spheres” for men and women.
Sexual division of labor
Labor allocated on the basis of gender resulting in men and women different types of jobs
Deceptive distinctions
Differences that appear to be based on gender that are actually due to something else like social class or race
Confirmation bias
When a single case of a few cases of the expected behavior confirm a belief, especially when the behavior his attention-getting or widely reported

Sex characteristics present at birth
Secondary sex characteristics
Sex characteristics that develop at puberty
Transgendered
A person whose gender does not correspond with that typically associated with their biological sex
