Expressive Flashcards
Composition/ Arrangement 1
The “tipped up” perspective allows a focus to be placed on the rug; enabling us to see its organic, decorative pattern. This means the pattern dominates the painting as it takes up more than half of the
artwork.
Composition/ Arrangement 2
The flat pattern of the rug mixes with the “real effect” of the 3D slippers so much so that it is difficult to differentiate between 3D and 2D. This gives the painting two different perspectives.
Composition/ Arrangement 3
Your eye is drawn to the bright orange chair with strong negative shapes
surrounding the chair creating contrast with the dark floor.
Composition/ Arrangement 4
The scene is made more personal by its slightly ramshackle aspect—the
carelessly draped fabric over the chair and the odd angle makes it seem more intimate
Media Handling/ Techniques 1
In this painting Redpath has used large brush strokes and impasto (thick paint) to create visual texture and movement.
Media Handling/ Techniques 2
Redpath has presented chalky colours for the draped fabric and Indian rug. This has been achieved by the thick layering of pale paint over colours of more intensity.
Media Handling/ Techniques 3
Redpath has outlined the chair, slippers, cloth and patterns to give them form and also to make sure your eye is drawn to them.
Media Handling/ Techniques 4
The artist has made key objects touch one another in order to make us move visually across the composition
Colour 1
Redpath has used a selective colour scheme, mainly consisting of primary colours. These colours, especially the red, draw your eye round
the painting to different areas.
Colour 2
The block, flat shapes of primary colour are typical of Henri Matisse’s style which heavily inspired Redpath’s artwork.
Colour 3
The dappled white in the draped fabric and rug break up the dark blues in the background and provide a balance to the painting.
Colour 4
The artist has used dark receding blues for the background with advancing warm colours for the chair and rug in the foreground. These colours, along with the tones used, give the painting a lot of depth
Line 1
Redpath has used a thin black sketchy line to outline the objects and the patterns in order to make them stand out and draw our attention to
them.
Line 2
Redpath has used simple thin black lines for the folds of the fabric which creates form and makes it appear realistically draped across the chair.
Line 3
Redpath has used line to create pattern and movement throughout the composition. For example, the flowing lines of the rug that complement the lines of draped fabric
Tone 1
The heavy use of dark tone contrasts with the bright white of the draped fabric and white rug, this creates balance and leads your eye round the painting.
Tone 2
The lack of tone in the chair makes it appear 2D this is in contrast with the shoes that have shadows creating a 3D effect and making them stand out against the other objects.
Tone 3
In this painting Redpath has used the dark tones to emphasize the bold colours such as the red and blue, in the patterned rug and bright chair
Texture 1
Redpath has used large visible brushstrokes and thick paint to create visual texture and detail on the flat shapes of the objects, especially the cloth and rug.
Texture 2
Texture of the walls in the back contrast with the smooth texture of the red chair and rug
Shape/ Form 1
Redpath has used large simplified, almost silhouette shapes for the chair, slippers and cloth which divide up the composition into positive and negative shapes and creates a visual impact throughout the painting.
Shape/ Form 2
The lack of form in the background keeps your eye on the focal point of the rug and the chair.
Shape/ Form 3
Some forms have been flattened into 2D shapes while others remain 3D, making it difficult to differentiate between the two
Pattern 1
The pattern is a very important visual element in this artwork as it dominates over half of the painting.
Pattern 2
This pattern consists of a brightly coloured, organic pattern which contrasts with the angular lines of the chair.
Pattern 3
The lines within this pattern also curve round and up to lead your eye to the chair and draped fabric, making sure your eye is drawn around the painting in a circular fashion
Scale 1
In this painting, Redpath has focused on particular objects; the chair, slippers and the patterned rug are the largest part of this composition which makes them the focal point of the painting.
Scale 2
The overall dimensions of the painting are 73 x 96cm. This makes the objects seem more lifelike due to a more realistic scale
Style 1
The vivid colours and decorative sense of form reflect the work of Henri Matisse. You can see this in the brightly coloured and simple 2D shapes of the patterned rug and chair.
Style 2
In this painting the influence of Matisse can also be seen in the Fauvist red of the chair and slippers
Subject Matter 1
Redpath has decided to focus on a domestic scene of ordinary objects found in her home that might normally be overlooked. This creates a relatable scene for the viewer.
Subject Matter 2
Redpath chose these objects because they were familiar to her whilst also creating visual impact, due to the strong flat red of the chair and the sharp bold pattern of the rug
Mood/ Atmosphere 1
In this painting the artist has a mixture of bold colours, simple large shapes and pattern to create a lively and exciting composition
and feeling.
Mood/ Atmosphere 2
The painting also feels quite content and comfortable due to the familiar objects used and their association with home comforts
