Inner conflict
> Rhyme scheme is ABBA, opposite to the title “exposure”, as rhyme scheme is like being encased, enclosed.
Rhetorical Qs - “it is that we are dying?”, “what are we doing here?”
Repetition of “but thing happens” shows he’s desperate for change.
“Confuse our memory” is a direct quotation of internal conflict, highlighting the fragmented thoughts he is having and creating the feeling that he’s losing sanity.
Sibilance
Alliteration of the ‘S’ sound throughout, creates a dark atmosphere or could also create a soundscape of harsh winds surrounding them and the exposure they have to the bullets.
Tone
The atmosphere created by Owen is one of misery, with a slow pace and a constant sense of hopelessness.
Fear is also shown through the poem, further enhanced by the constant sibilance sound which could symbolise the bullets - showing that he is constantly on the edge of death.
Semantic fields
Weather - portrayed as an enemy force "Iced east winds" "Mad gusts" "Shivering ranks of grey" Despair - highlights the hopeless tone through out the poem "Twitching agonies" "Sunk fires"
“Dawn”
Noun, is meant to bring new life and hope - however, could also infer attack.
Rhyme scheme
The rhyme scheme is ABBA, this is an enclosed structure which juxtaposes the title of ‘exposure’ and the clear emotion he is feeling.
This also shows his need to be protected
“Black with snow”
Oxymoron
“Snow” - noun, signifies the purity of light and Mother Nature, indicating hope.
“Black” noun, shows the weather to have an evil intent and also gives the sense that the soldiers are smothered, there’s no getting away - the only way is death.
