we only…stormy
we only know war lasts, rain soaks, and clouds sag stormy
attacks…grey
attacks once more in ranks on shivering on ranks of grey
sudden…silence
sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence
deep…fusses
deep into grassier ditches. so we drowse, sun-dozed, littered with blossoms trickling where the blackbird fusses
for gods…afraid
for gods invincible spring our love is made afraid
shrivelling…crisp
shrivelling many hands, puckering foreheads crisp
