Many believed war was fully of glory, but Willfred Owen ‘exposes’ the truth in this poem

Poetry written by him expressed his anger at the cruelty of war

Merciless iced east wind that knive us → nature is dangerous and cruel, unforgiving, violent
For love of god seems dying → soilders feel abandoned → emphaises lonliness of war
Misery of Dawn → juxtaposition (dawn is normally and beautiful and not feared) → shows how cruel and strange war is
All their eyes are ice → Trauma from the soldiers (no longer show emotion) / the soilders have been killed by the weather

But nothing happens - repition reinforces the boring nature of war → constant waiting
Pararhyme is used (half rhyme where hard constants rhyme but not vowels) to show the unease of the soldiers (ABBAC)

This poem shows the misery WW1 soldiers have to face every night, while waiting in the trenches.
Although nothing is happening and there is no fighting, they face danger from their ‘exposure’ to the weather
