exponents Flashcards
1
Q
what is the negative rule?
A
you put the base in the denominator and put a one in the numerator. You proceed to put the original exponent in the denominator. e.g 3^-2 becomes 1/3^2
2
Q
What is the product rule (in exponents) and when do you use it?
A
a^x . a^y = a^x+y (if the bases are different you have to do the calculations). Multiplication.
3
Q
What is the quotient rule (in exponents) and when do you use it?
A
a^x / a^y = a^x-y (if the bases are different you have to do the calculations). Division.
4
Q
What is the zero rule?
A
a^0 = 1
5
Q
What is the power rule?
A
(a^x)^y = a^xy
6
Q
(a/b)^x = ?
A
a^x / b^x
7
Q
(ab)^x = ?
A
a^x . a^x
8
Q
√a^2 = ?
A
√a^2 = a. e.g √5^2 = 5
9
Q
√x . √y = ?
A
√xy
