What is the Multiply - Add Exponent Law?
If two numbers with the same base are being multiplied by a set of exponents, then add the exponents to simplify.
Eg. 52 x 53 = 55
What is the Divide - Subtract Exponent Law?
When two numbers with the same base have exponents and are dividing one by the other, subtract the exponents to simplify.
Eg. 53/52 = 5x5x5/5x5 = 5
What is the Power - Multiply Exponent Law?
When an expression with an exponent is raised to another power, multiply the powers together to simplify.
Eg. (62)3 = (62)(62)(62) = (6x6)(6x6)(6x6) = 66
What is the Negative Exponent Law?
When there is a negative exponent, the expression should be put in fraction form with 1 as the numerator and the negative exponent in the denominator becomes positive.
Eg. 83/85 = 83 - 5 = 8-2 = 1/82 = 1/64
What is the Zero Exponent Law?
Any nonzero number raised to a power of 0 is equal to 1.
Eg. 43 - 3 = 40 = 1
Raising a fraction to a power greater than 1 results in…
… a greater number.
Eg. (1/2)2 = 1/4
A negative number raised to an even power results in…
… a positive number
A negative number raised to an odd power results in…
… a negative number
A number raised to the first power results in…
… the base number itself.
