explosive investigation Flashcards
purpose of explosive investigation
- initial investigation = piece together context
- evidence and trial = what can be proved
types of evidence
- classification - are the explosives linked? can they be traced?
- identification - type of explosive? prim. sec?
- quantification - how much?
the 3 Ss
selectivity - determining the analyte from the mixture
specificity - only the desired analyte contributes to the result
sensitivity - LoD and LoQ in a linear slope response
collecting residues
look for point on detonation (crater)
appropriate cordons to accommodate scatter
embedded in nearby objects
analytical equipment
spectroscopy - Ir/Raman, X -ray, SEM-EDX
separation - HPLC/GC, Ion chromatography, electrophoresis
detectors - Mass spec, FID
clean room techniques
- positive pressure
- high efficiency particulate air filters
- disposable equipment
- regular monitoring
contaminant levels and their actions
less than 5ng = no action
5-10ng = confirm Id and clean
10-100 ng = clean area and test until negative
more than 100ng = ID source, review affected case work
