Exploring The Moon (Topic 9) Flashcards
What are the differences in the internal divisions of the earth and moon
.The mean thickness of the lunar crust is 50-60km typically 3x that of the earth- the thickness of the lunar highlands on the far side can be up to 160km
.the radius of the moons core is less than 25% of the moons radius(on earth it’s more than 50%)
.the moons core is not at the centre of the moon but offset by 2km towards the earth (the near side)
When was the first time we saw the far side of the moon
1959
Which probe saw the far side of the moon
Luna 3
What did the probe see on the far side of the moon
Lots of cratered highlands and one noteworthy sea (mare moscoviense)
When did JFK make his speech announcing the Apollo space programme
1961
What are the theory’s of the moons formation
.giant impact hypothesis
.fission theory
.capture theory
.condensation theory
Fission theory?
The earth was spinning so fast that a section (that is now the Pacific Ocean) flew of and formed the moon
Capture theory?
The earth and moon formed at different parts of the solar system but the moon was “captured” by the earths gravity
Condensation theory
The earth and moon formed together at the same time out of the material from the solar nebular
Giant impact hypothesis
A large body about mars sized (theia) struck an old earth, theia and part of earth were vaporised and condensed into the moon
