Caravels
Caravels were small, fast and easy to move with waterproof decks
Patron
a person who supports with money, gifts or efforts an artist, writer, (like: a patron of the arts)
Carracks and naos
Big ships with square and lateen sails that were designed to carry more cargo
Navigation
the art or science of plotting or directing the course of a ship.
Cross-staff and quadrants
Cross-staffs+quadrants were used to measure latitude and didn’t depend on storms. But u had to look at the sun to read witch meant in affected sailors eye sight. Made in 1500
Compass
A magnetic needle that pointed magnetic north and was created by the Chinese and improved in the 15centuary
Astrolabe
Measured latitude by measuring the angle of the North Star or sun.
Scurvy
A deadly disease caused by lack of fresh fruit and veg. Biggest killer of sailors on voyages.
Hardtack
They were hard biscuits that sometimes came infested with black beetles and were not very nutritious but never went bad
Log and line
Was used to measure the speed of the boat. A log was thrown of the back of the boat and was attached to a reel of knotted rope the amount of rope pulled in 1 minute would calculate the ships speed.
Cartographer
Someone who makes maps
Clinker built
When wood on boats were interlocked in together and every plank was supported by two others underneath them.
Spice trade
Spices were traded in different parts, Africa was the main trading point and spices were used to put taste into rotten food . Trade routes were made so it would be easier to get spices
Christianity
the Christian religion, including the Catholic, Protestant churches.
Captain+first mate
a person who is at the head of or I charge of a ship.
The person next in command beneath the captain.
