Explanations of Institutional Aggression Flashcards
What is the deprivation model?
Prison/loss of freedom = psychological trauma, 5 pains (deprivation of): liberty, goods, heterosexual relations, autonomy and security, isolation and rejection from society = frustration and despair, prison sub culture
What model was created to add to the deprivation model?
Importation model
What is the importation model?
inmate aggression primary result of offenders attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviour formed outside prison, socio-demographic: age, ethnicity, criminal career: time served, offence history
What study investigated the importation model as an explanation for prison violence?
DeLisi 2004: 831 male random sample from 20000US, measured serious violence, controlled for sentence time, several parts of importation: gang membership (weak support), violence history, racial minorities, age (more younger), escape history (all strong support
Who compared the effectiveness of the derivation and importation models in explaining violent incidents against staff and inmates?
Jiang and Fisher-Giorlando 2002: 431 disciplinary reports on men, deprivation better at explaining incidents against staff and overall better predictor, importation better at explaining against other inmates
Who provides support for the deprivation model?
Nacci 1977: population density of inmates correlates with violent assaults but not with non-violent escape attempts
Who provides support for the importation model?
Poole and Rigoli 1983: among juvenile offenders in 4 institutions, pre-institutional violence was best predictor of inmate aggression
Who supports the findings of Jiang and Fisher-Giorlando 2002?
Grapendaal 1990: deprivation model more useful in predicting opposition to the institution, roughly equal influence of both models for exploitation of others
What is an IDA point that relates to a study?
Social sensitive research. Harer and Steffensmeier 1996: 58 US prisons, black inmates = higher violence but less alcohol/drug misconduct than white inmates, reflect racial differences in US differently - due to nature or nurture?
