explanations for obedience Flashcards
What is antigenic state?
When acting to follow orders
Why does an antigenic state happen?
The individual sees the command giver as responsible and the individual looses a sense of self
What is antigenic state theory?
The idea that we’ve socialized from a young age to obey rules - Milgram
What happens when someone goes into an antigenic state?
They give up some of their free will
What evidence is there for antigenic state?
62.5% of Milgram’s RPS shocked up to 450 volts and 100% shocked up to 300 volts. but when remote authority was introduced obedience levels dropped to 20.5% as the individuals remain in an anatomic state
How does uniform affect obedience?
Uniform adds authority especially when delivering orders
Evidence for uniform affecting obedience?
Dieman = in New York a stooge dressed as a security guard and 38% obeyed where as when dressed in normal clothes on 19% obeyed
How does location affect obedience?
In places with greater perceived authority there is usually greater obedience
Evidence for location affecting obedience?
Milgram = repeated his experiment in a run down office block and obedience fell to 47.5%
How does proximity affect obedience?
How aware the individual is to the consequence to their actions changes obedience; the closer they are the less likely they are to obey
Evidence for proximity affecting obedience?
Milgram= the teacher had to physically push the learners hand onto the panel to be shocked.
Who spoke about authoritarian personality?
