Explanations for Obedience Flashcards
What are the 3 explanations for obedience?
Agentic state, legitimacy of Authority and Situtational factors
What is the agentic state?
When a person believes that someone else will take responsibility for their own actions and will not suffer the consequences of their own actions due to the agent
What is a agentic shift?
When people switch from a autonomous state (when they will take responsibility) to the agentic state (they dont think they are responsibile)
What is legitimacy of authority?
The credibility of the authority links to how likely you are to obey and listen ti them
Whats a example?
If a doctor told you to take certain drugs compared to some random person on the streets, you will 100% more likely to comply with the doctor as they are seen as legitimate
What is a expert authority?
When people see some people as more legitimate and therefore more knowledgable and responsbile
What are situational factors?
When the situation/context you are in affects whether you will comply or not
What are examples of situational factors?

Uniform
Whether we can see the consequences
How close the authority is (more pressure to obey and less to resist)
