method:
- PP’s told a visual perception task
- had to compare different lengths of lines
- 6 confederates, 1 actor
- confederates began getting all answers right then got some wrong to see if PP would conform
Ash 1955 baseline study
Results:
75% conformed to wrong answers at least once
1/3 conformed to all incorrect answers
Ash 1955 baseline study
variations:
changed group size from 1-15
unanimity: 1 confederate said right answers
task difficulty: lines made more similar in length
Ash 1955 baseline study
varied study results:
conformity increased with group size until 3 confederated, then remained at 31.8% through to 15
75% less likely to conform if another pp also disagreed with confederates
conformity increased when lines harder to decipher
