Q

what did watson et al find?

A

he found that the concordance rate for MZ twin insomnia was 47% while the concordance for DZ twin insomnia was only 15%. This means that genetics must play a role in whether someone suffers from insomnia.

11
Q

what are some problems with Dauvillers method?

A

The study required the participants to complete a self report questionnaire. This means that the validity could be damaged by scocial desirability. it is also possible that insomniacs may incorrectly recall information about their families sleeping habits simply because their brain will not be functioning as well.

Q

Why does the nature v nature debate question the validity of the Genetic explanation?

A

A lot of the research into the genetic explanation of insomnia uses family studies. Families share genetics and environments. this makes it hard to tell whether families are similar because of the shared environment or shared genetics.

Q

give an example of classical conditioning causing insomnia.

A

every night Dave brushes his teeth before he goes to sleep. one evening he is stressing about work whilst brushing his teeth and cant get to sleep all night. the next day Dave has solved his problems at work and is calm. He goes to brush his teeth before bed and subconsciously associates brushing his teeth with stress and not being able to get to sleep. Dave cant get to sleep again and the association is reinforced. Dave’s CBT therapist tells him to stop brushing his teeth. Dave doesn’t brush his teeth and finds that he can get to sleep fine.

Q

what did mercer find?

A

he found that insomniacs tend to underestimate how long they sleep for

17
Q

who does mercers research support the Psychological explanation of insomnia?

A

his research supports the psychological explanation of insomnia because it supports the idea that the only reason why they cant sleep is because they are worrying about their sleep to much.

18
Q

what did tang and harvey do?

A

They fitted participants with an pictograph. this device measures movement in the night. The idea is that less movement equals more sleep. he then got the participants to guess how much sleep they had gotten. most of the participants underestimated.

19
Q

what did wang do?

A

wang compared insomniacs with normal people and looked at their personality factors.

20
Q

what did wang find?

A

wang found that insomniacs scored higher on scales measuring neuroticism, anxiety and impulsivity.

21
Q

what did kales do?

A

he assessed the personalities of insomniacs and healthy controls using a personality inventory

22
Q

what did kales find?

A

he found that insomniacs demonstrated neurotic depression, chronic anxiety and an inability to express anger unlike the control group who did not display these traits.
