What are tips for explanation tasks ?
SAS (signpost, acknowledge and explore (patient cues, repetition of language) and summaries; chunk and check: pausing after each section and check understanding; Consider a diagram
How does the introduction of all explanations begin? (3)
WIPER + ICE + explanation of structure; I: understanding of what’s going on so far ? Any thoughts as to what may have caused symptoms; C: concerns; E: expectations; explanation of structure: ask if this is ok and patients wants to add or discuss anything else
How does the Ending of all explanations close? (5)
- Reassure + concerns/questions; 2. Summarise main points, 3. Understanding (just explain to me in your own words what you’ve understood from the conversation we’ve had today), 4. Leaflet/website 5. Follow up + Thank patient
How would you explain a Disease ?
I DMS: initial understanding of condition (have they heard of it before, anyone else talked to them about it); Diagnosis: what is it, symptoms, causes/triggers/RFs; Management: Rx(+SEs) + monitoring; Safety Netting
Explanation of procedure
- Contraindications checked; 2. What is it?; 3: purpose/reason for it ?; 4: procedure details (before, during and after); 5: risk and benefits and 6: alternatives
How would you explain a treatment ? (6)
Contraindications checked,
Initial understanding of condition, how it works; Treatment course (THLET), side effects, safety netting.
Explanation of therapy
What it is ?, what it’s used for and its benefit; how it works ?, what it involves ?, outcome and others.
What does THLET stand for in treatment course ?
Treatment Frequency: how often you have to take it ?, How it’s taken ? (tablet or oral), Length of treatment; effect: how long does it take to become effective ? , tests
