Explaining The Growth Of NRMs Flashcards
Marginality: troeltsch, weber
Troeltsch- sects draw members from poor/oppressed
Weber- sects arise from groups who are marginal to society because they feel that they are not recieveing the economic/social status they deserve
Nation of Islam recruited from disadvantaged blacks
Relative deprivation
Stark and Bainbridge- relatively deprived break off from churches and form sects when MC wants to compromise its beliefs to fit into society
E.g. they may stress Christ’s claim that it is harder for a rich man to go to heaven but the MC may not want to
Social change
Wilson- periods of rapid change undermine norms and values, producing anomie. To combat this, many turn to sects
E.g. industrial revolution led to the birth of methodism
