Explaining Phobias Flashcards
what approach is used to explain phobias?
behaviourist approach
who proposed the two way process model?
Mower
how are phobias acquired?
classical conditioning(associations)
how are phobias maintained?
operant conditioning(consequences)
who are the researchers involved in the classical conditioning of phobias?
Watson and Rayner
what did Watson and Rayner do?
- created a phobia in a 9-month old, Little Albert
- at the start of the study , Albert showed no anxiety and he tried to play with the neutral stimulus the white rat
what is the process of classical conditioning in Little Albert’s experiment?
-rat(neutral stimulus)–>no fear(no response)
-noise, hammer(unconditioned stimulus)–>fear(unconditioned response)
-noise(unconditioned stimulus)+white rat(neutral stimulus)–>fear(unconditioned response)
- white rat(conditioned stimulus)–>fear(conditioned response)
how was the fear of white rats generalized?
- Little Albert was shown other furry objects, e.g. non-white rabbit, fur coat , Watson wearing a Santa Claus beard made out of cotton balls = little Albert did display distress at the sight of these
how are phobias maintained through operant conditioning?
learning through consequences makes the phobias more long-lasting
- negative reinforcement: when a person is confronted with the phobic situation, they tend to get anxious and avoid the situation that is unpleasant. The anxiety is reduced
- such behaviour results in desirable consequences, meaning behaviour will be repeated
what did mowrer suggest we avoid phobia stimulus for?
- we successfully escape the fear and anxiety that we would have experienced if we had remained there
- the reduction in fear reinforces the avoidance behaviour, so phobia is maintained
what are the evaluations of treating phobias?
+ real life application in exposure therapies
- does not account for the cognitive aspects of phobias
+ evidence for a link between bad experiences and phobias
