Explain the two sets of steps for application. Subsequently, compare these two and integrate them with each other, as possible and relevant. Flashcards
explain steps for GGW
- observe the the principles in the text address the original audience
- Discover a parallel situation in a contemporary context.
- Make your applications specific
explain ITBI’s four step method
- determine the original application/s intended by the passage
- evaluate the level of specificity of those applications to their original audience. if transferable to us, apply them
- if not, find one or more broader cross-cultural principles that the specific elements of the text teach
- teach that principle in an appropriate and applicable way for people to apply
steps 1 of each
correlate to one another, just with different wording
difference of steps 1
timing. GGW assumes knowledge of the first four steps which already addressed many questions. ITBI waits until the application step to address these questions
final analysis of steps 1
same destination, different mode of transportation
steps two correlate together
likewise, all about timing. different methodology used at differing times, but gets you to the same destination. GGW assumes you have already done your homework and are ready to apply. ITBI assumes there is still work to be done. no issue, just a matter of preference
steps 3 do not match
ITBI’s step three stand alone. my conviction is that GGW has already implemented this step within the previous four steps on IJ, so there was no need to get specific. thus, they simplify.
step 3 (GGW) and step 4 (ITBI)
both correlate well together. same concept, different wording.
how can we integrate both methods?
use ITBI, because step 3 for ITBI serves as a reminder, or a check point so to speak, and is therefore more complete. Also, ITBI asks some good questions that GGW does not ask, so together, they both make an astounding leap forward in applying God’s word.
pros and cons
GGW assumes knowledge of 5 step journey. ITBI’s steps can be followed without this knowledge, though implementing GGW 5 step approach will enhance the application process significantly. Use ITBI, but if possible, use both.
