Q

explain ITBI’s four step method

A
  1. determine the original application/s intended by the passage
  2. evaluate the level of specificity of those applications to their original audience. if transferable to us, apply them
  3. if not, find one or more broader cross-cultural principles that the specific elements of the text teach
  4. teach that principle in an appropriate and applicable way for people to apply

Q

difference of steps 1

A

timing. GGW assumes knowledge of the first four steps which already addressed many questions. ITBI waits until the application step to address these questions

Q

steps two correlate together

A

likewise, all about timing. different methodology used at differing times, but gets you to the same destination. GGW assumes you have already done your homework and are ready to apply. ITBI assumes there is still work to be done. no issue, just a matter of preference

Q

steps 3 do not match

A

ITBI’s step three stand alone. my conviction is that GGW has already implemented this step within the previous four steps on IJ, so there was no need to get specific. thus, they simplify.

Q

how can we integrate both methods?

A

use ITBI, because step 3 for ITBI serves as a reminder, or a check point so to speak, and is therefore more complete. Also, ITBI asks some good questions that GGW does not ask, so together, they both make an astounding leap forward in applying God’s word.

Q

pros and cons

A

GGW assumes knowledge of 5 step journey. ITBI’s steps can be followed without this knowledge, though implementing GGW 5 step approach will enhance the application process significantly. Use ITBI, but if possible, use both.
