What type of experiment is paper chromatography?
Separation
Method- filtration
- set the funnel on top of a conical flask
- fold the filter paper and place on funnel
- pour mixture on to the funnel with the filter paper
what apparatus are used for filtration?
filter paper
funnel
conical flask
(beaker with mixture)
Method- crystalisation
- set a tripod on top of a burner
- place wire gauze on top
- place a beaker with boiling water on top of the stand
- place China dish with solution on top
- light the burner and let the water evaporate
what apparatus are used for crystalisation
tripod
wire gauze
burner
beaker
China dish
Simple Distillation- method
- set up experiment
- heat up salt solution
- when water evaporates, the water vapors rise
- these vapors pass through condenser
- the liquid drops to a beaker
- after water evaporates, salt is left behind
what apparatus are used for simple distillation
thermometer
distillation flask
burner (?)
condenser
conical flask
Paper chromatography- method
- paper is prepped with a pencil line drawn near the bottom and an ink sample on the line
- solvent is created by heating water and ethanol
- lower the paper into solvent
- the dye should move upwards
what is the solvent front
How much the water (solvent) moved up from the pencil/base line.
how to find the Rf value
Rf (color)= distance spot moved/distance solvent moved
