Experimental Techniques Flashcards
Fractional distillation
Has the main idea of simple distillation just works with more then 2 substances and is a more complicated process but it separates the mixture depending on the boiling point
simple distillation
separates two liquids by heating them up till one of the liquids starts to boil and the gas then goes into a condenser where the cold makes the gas condense and then you have the two sperate liquids
Chromatography
molecules in mixture applied onto the surface or into the solid, and fluid stationary phase is separating from each other while moving with the aid of a mobile phase.
Crystallisation
if a saturated hot solution is allowed to cool, the solute is no longer soluble in the solvent and forms crystals of pure compound (also works with evaporation)
Filtration
The process of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid through a filter paper. The liquid can go through but the solid builds up on the filter paper
solvent
the substance in which the solute is dissolved (liquid)
solute
the substance that dissolves in a solvent to produce a mixture
solution
a mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be varied continuously up to what is called the limit of solubility
substance
a matter which has a specific composition and specific properties
mobile phase
Liquids and gases are in the mobile phase because they flow and the phase implies moving
stationary phase
Solids are in the stationary phase, it means they don’t move
Chromatograms
The product of chromatography
solubility
How well something dissolves
insoluble
That a substance doesn’t dissolve in a solvent
