Experimental Skills Flashcards
Metric Convertion
Kilo- Hecta- Deca- Base Deci- Centi- Mili-
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing significant figures
Adding/subtracting:- the result is rounded off so it has the same number decimal digits as the number with the least number of decimal digits
Multiplying/dividing:- result should be rounded off to have the same number of significant figures as the number with the least significant figures
Accuracy vs. Precision
Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value
Precision is how close a measurement is to other measured values or numbers
Density
D=M/V
REMEMBER*:- Units g/mL or g/cm^3 because g=mL=cm^3
Standard Deviation
|data - mean|
Relative Uncertainty
(average deviation/sample mean) * 100
Shows how precise the data was
Percent Error
|Experimental-True/ True| *100
Shows how accurate the data is compare to the tue value
Systematic Errrors vs. Random Errors
Systematic:- one directional
Random:- cannot be corrected
