Experimental Designs Flashcards
What is a independent measures design?
Two groups of participants taking part in two different conditions of the independent variable.
What is a repeated measures design?
One group of participants doing both conditions of an independent variable.
What is a matched pairs design?
Participants are in 2 groups similar to a independent measures design however the participants are matched in pairs based on similar characteristics.
2 strengths of matched pairs design
No order effects due to 2 separate conditions. Only see each condition once.
Individual differences I.e participant variables are not an issue.
2 strengths of a independent measures design.
No order effects as participants only see each condition once.
2 strengths of repeated measures design
Less participants required as it’s only one group.
No individual differences distorting the effect of the IV.
Counterbalancing can be used.
2 weaknesses of a independent measures design
Individual differences can distort the effect of the IV.
More participants are needed.
2 weaknesses of a matched pairs design.
Limiting if unknown characteristics to match on.
Time consuming to match participants.
2 weaknesses of a repeated measures design
Order effects
Demand characteristics
Each condition - participants see them all
