Experimental Design Flashcards
Repeated measures
All participants take part in all conditions.
Independent group design
Participants are allocated to different groups where each groups represents one experimental condition.
Matched pairs
Pairs of participants are first matched on some variables that may effect the DV. One member of the pair does the first condition and the other does the second.
Random allocation
An attempt to control for participant variables in an independent group design which ensures that each participant has the same chance of being in one condition than the other.
Counterbalancing
An attempt to control the effects of repeated measures design, half the participants do the condition in one order and the other half in the opposite order; to avoid order effects
Experimental design
Different ways in which the testing of participants can be organised in relation to the conditions.
