Experimental Design Flashcards
What are experimental designs?
How ps are organised across the conditions
What are experimental designs often confused with?
Experimental methods (lab, field etc)
What is an Independent groups design?
Each p takes part in ONE condition only
(A vs B)
What is a Repeated measures design?
Each p takes part in BOTH conditions
(A1 vs A2)
What is a matched pairs design?
Each p takes part in ONE condition, but ps are matched on relevant variables (age, sex, IQ)
What are two methods of random allocation?
Lottery method
Random number generator
What are two pros of Independent groups?
Order effects reduced
Demand characteristics reduced
What are two cons of Independent groups?
Participant EVs between groups lowering internal validity
Less economical
What are two pros of Repeated measure?
Participant EVs controlled
Less ps needed
What are two cons of Repeated measure?
Order effects - an EV affecting results (practise or fatigue effects)
What are three pros of Matched pairs?
Participant EVs reduced
Order effects reduced
Demand characteristics reduced
What are two cons of Matched pairs?
Time consuming and expensive - less economical
Ps can’t be truly matched
