Experimental Design Flashcards
Repeated Measure Design
The same participants are allocated to all groups
Repeated Measure Designs (Strengths)
Extra participants don’t need to be used, the same participants are used
Repeated Measure Designs (Weakness)
There is a risk of order effect (Demand Characteristics)
Repeated Measures Design
How can order effect be countered?
Counterbalancing
The sample is split in half with one half completing two conditions in one order and the other half completing the conditions in the reverse order
Independent Group Designs
Different participants take part in each experimental condition (randomly allocated)
Independent measure design (strength)
No order effect, as participants will only partake in one condition
Independent measure Design (Weakness)
Risk of Participant variables, affecting the results between conditions rather than the manipulation of the IV
Matched pair Designs
Participants take part in only one experimental condition, they are recruited specifically to be similar in relevant characteristics (Age, Intelligence, Gender) to matched participants in the other conditions
Matched pair designs (Strength)
No chance off Order effect, participants only take part in one condition
The participant matching process reduces participants variables
Matched pair designs (Weakness)
Matching is a more complex process, it will always be difficult to match participants identically
