Experimental Flashcards
Experimental
Cause and effect relationship
occurs when one variable is
manipulated to assess
the result on another
variable
Experimental group
Receives the treatment or independent variable (what’s being tested).
Control group
Receives a placebo not the treatment
Serves as a comparison.
Random Assignment
Participants are randomly placed into two groups, this helps to control confounding variables
Double-Blind Procedure
Both the research participants and the research staff are ignorant (blind) about whether the research participants have received the treatment or a placebo.
Placebo/Placebo Effect
Inert substance or condition
Triggers the effects of the IV
Independent Variable
Manipulated by researcher
Cause
Dependent Variable
What is being measured
effect of the IV
Confounding Variable
Extraneous variable whose presence affects the results
Validity
Whether test measures or predicts what it is supposed to
Reliability
Whether test yields consistent results
Generalizability
Extent to which results or findings form a particular experiment can be said to be true of the larger population.
Quasi Experiment
Does not use random assignment or groups
