Experiment 1: Molar Mass of a Solid Acid Flashcards
Define Molarity
The number of moles of a substance dissolved in each liter of solution. In practice, a solution of known molarity is prepared by weighing an appropriate amount of solute, placing it in a container called a volumetric flask, and adding enough solvent until an accurately calibrated final volume is reached.
Define Solution
A homogeneous mixture.
Define Solvent
The major component in a solution.
In acid-base titration, how is the number of moles of the hydrogen ion determined?
In an acid-base titration, a base of known concentration (typically NaOH) is used to titrate and acid substance (which furnishes H+ions) to determine the number of moles of H.
An indicator is used to visually signal when the volume of NaOH is sufficient to completely react with the H+ ions has been added.
How do we determine the moles of OH- that have reacted during the titration?
We simply need to know the concentration (molarity) and the volume of NaOH solution that was added to cause the indicator to change color.
Define Titration
Titration is the slow addition of one solution of a known concentration (called a titrant) to a known volume of another solution of unknown concentration until the reaction reaches neutralization, which is often indicated by a color change. The solution called the titrant must satisfy the necessary requirements to be a primary or secondary standard. In a broader sense, titration is a technique to determine the concentration of an unknown solution.
Define Monoprotic Acid
An acid that produces just one mole of H+ ion per formula (such as HCl) is a monoprotic acid.
Define Diprotic Acid
An acid that produces two moles of H+ ion per formula (such as H2SO4) are diprotic.
Define Polyprotic Acids
Acids which furnish more than one mole of H+ ion when they are dissolved in water are called POLYPROTIC acids.
What is the purpose of a titration?
To quantitatively determine the concentration of an unknown solution called titrand.
Define Acid
A substance that produces hydrogen ions, or protons, when it is dissolved in water.
Define Molar Mass
The mass (in grams) of one mole of a compound.
How many acidic hydrogens does Acetic Acid (CH3COOH) have?
1
The phrase “protic” is representative of what?
How many ACIDIC hydrogens there are in an acid.
Define Equivalence Point
The point in the reaction at which the number of moles of H+ furnished by the acid exactly equals the number of moles of OH- furnished by the base.
