What is psychology?
science of behavior
They rely on scientific methods when conducting psychological research, they are _______.
psychologists
What is knowledge in Latin?
scientia
What does science as a content mean?
The science that we know today, like the facts we learn in psychology.
What does science as a process mean?
A process that includes systematic ways while gathering data
Commonsense Psychology is what kind of data?
non scientific sources of data
What is Commonsense Psychology?
a non scientific sources of data that shapes our expectations and beliefs and directs our behavior toward others
Confirmation Bias is under sources of physical information. True or False?
True
When information is offered by people we like, respect, or admire, is typically accepted without question
Either Confirmation Bias / Sources of physical information (much better if ang ianswer kay sources of physical information)
What is/are inferential strategies?
are mathematical procedures that allow psychologists to make inferences about collected data
These needs facts when conducting research and needs to be applied while using scientific method
Experimental Psychology
What is scientific method?
Refers to steps in which scientists take to gather and verify information, and answer questions, explain relationships, and communicate findings
What are the important characteristics of a scientific method?
the scientific mentality, gathering empirical data, seek general principles, good thinking, self-correction, publicize results, and replication
What are the 3 main tools of scientific method?
observation, measurements, and experimentation
What are antecedent conditions?
circumstances that before the event or behavior that we want to explain
What is the purpose of comparing treatment conditions?
This is in order to test explanations of behaviors systematically and scientifically
What are psychology experiments?
controlled procedure in which at least two different treatment conditions are applied to subjects
These are three minimum requirements in conducting an experiment:
must have, procedures in manipulating the setting, predicted outcome must be observable, and must be able to measure the outcome
What are experiments should be?
ethical, target participants should not be limited, and establish a cause and effect relationship
Example of cause (independent variable)
eating heavy breakfast before taking a test
Example of effect (dependent variable)
higher test scores
These are two conditions that have to be in place so that one can be compared with the other
cause and effect
What is hawthorne effect?
the alteration of behavior by the subjects of a study due to their awareness of being observed
