Expasion Slots Flashcards
AGP
Accelerated Graphics Port
Used for fast graphics video cards
Replaced by PCIe
AGP slots direct connection to RAM ( dark brown)
32-bit channel & 66MHz clock ( version 1.0)
66MHz clock result in data rate= 266.67MBps
2x, 4x, 8x version, you multiply the clock 266.67x8=2133.33MBps
PCI stands for
Peripheral Component Interconnect 32-bit slot ( usually white) average home system Either 33MHz or 66 MHz speed If 33, throughput will be 133MBps If 66, throughput will be 266MBps Servers may have 64-bit slots if so double the data rate average home users don't have 64-bit slots PCI slots run at 3.3 or 5 Vaults Universal PCI cards work in both slots
PCI-X
PCI-eXtended It's a double wide version of PCI running at 4x clock speed Similar to PCI but was replaced by PCIe that has very different connector & design
PCIe
Is a single ( narrow) fast serial connection and has different connector
Deals with lanes
LANE switched point to point single path between components ( is a pair of wires)
LINK combination of one or more LANES
1x 2x 4x 8x 12x 16x 32x lanes in the link of the components
Most common
X1 x4 x16 or 1, 4, & 16 lane PCIe slots & card expansion boards
PCIe specs
3 versions 1.0-250MBps(each direction) per lane 2.0-500MBps(each direction) per lane 3.0-1GBps(each direction) per lane X16=16GBps( each direction) 4.0 - Doubles rate again ( when released) Is high end gamers choice 3d video editing
PCIe up-plugging
Can use a higher-capability(longer) slot and plug in a lesser ( shorter) adapter
X8 cards into x16 slot runs at x8 speed
MOBO must support up-plugging
Down-plugging is only possible with a slot that is open ended
Not specifically allowed by the original spec
MiniPCI
Added to the PCI 2.2 for laptops
32-bit, 33MHz bus speed ( quarter size of full PCI cards
No access from outside case
Uses;
Wireless(wifi) fast Ethernet Bluetooth SATA controllers
Replaced by PCI express mini cards
AMR
Audio modem riser
Seperates the analog circuitry for modem and analog audio onto card
Permits the analog circuitry to be seperately certified by FCC
46-pin riser card
Replaced by CNR expansion card
CNR
Communications & Networking Riser
Replaced the AMR slot
MOBO can intergrate features, such as; standard sound chipset can be enhanced by CNR riser cards
60-pin riser card examples
Dolby digital surround sound added to the chipset
CNR includes network support
