Expanding universe Flashcards
To learn all the facts for the expanding universe section
If you look at the spectrum of radiation from 2 stars, how can you tell which star is hotter?
The hotter star has
a smaller peak wavelength
and
a larger area under the curve
What does Hubble’s law give evidence for?
the age of the universe
and
the expansion of the universe
What does the orbital speed of a galaxy help you work out?
The mass of the galaxy
What must exist to explain the fact that the rate at which the universe is expanding is increasing ?
Dark energy
What does cosmic microwave background radiation give evidence for?
the big bang theory
What law could we use to estimate the age of the universe?
Hubble’s law
What’s the name of the effect that causes shifts in wavelength of sound and light?
Doppler effect
What is the symbol for redshift on the formula sheet?
z
What gives evidence for dark energy?
The fact that the rate of expansion of the universe is increasing (acceleration of the universe)
If something making a sound is moving what will happen to it’s wavelength
It will decrease as it is coming towards you and it will increase as it’s going away
Doppler effect (think of the sound a siren makes)
What is the evidence for dark matter?
galaxies are rotating faster than their visible mass should cause, so there must be other mass which we can’t see (dark matter)
What is redshift?
Objects (eg stars) moving away from us have a longer wavelength (Doppler effect)
most galaxies have redshift - this is evidence for big bang theory
What evidence do we have for the big bang theory?
- Cosmic microwave background radiation
- the abundance of lighter elements (hydrogen and helium)
- the darkness of the sky (Olber’s paradox)
- the large number of galaxies showing redshift not blueshift
abundance =large amount of
In Doppler equation
when do you use +
and
when do you use -
+ (add) away
- towards
What is dark energy?
An unknown form of energy, put forward as a solution to the problem of why the expansion of the Universe is accelerating.
