Exothermic and Endothermic reactions Flashcards
What happens to energy in chemical reactions?
Energy is conserved in chemical reactions. the total energy of the system is the same before and after the reaction.
What is an endothermic reaction?
The reaction is cooler than the surroundings, it takes heat in.
What is an exothermic reaction?
The reaction is hotter than the surroundings, it lets the heat out.
Give an example of an endothermic reaction.
Ice melting.
Give an example of an exothermic reaction.
Fire burning.
When hydrochloric acid and sodium hydrochloric were the reactants in a chemical reaction, the initial temperature was 18° and the final temperature was 30°.
a) What was the temperature change?
b) Is it an endothermic or an exothermic reaction?
a) + 12°
b) exothermic (it’s +° and not -°)
