Exothermic and endothermic reactions Flashcards
Whats an exothermic reaction?
Exothermic reactions transfer energy to the surroundings.
What are some examples of exothermic reactions?
Combustion (burning)
Many oxidation reactions, for example rusting
Neutralisation reactions between acids and alkalis
What are endothermic reactions?
These are reactions that take in energy from the surroundings.
What happens to the temperature of an endothermic reaction?
Heat energy is taken in, causing the reaction mixture and its surroundings to get colder.
Give some examples of endothermic reactions.
Electrolysis
The reaction between ethanoic acid and sodium carbonate
The thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate in a blast furnace
What happens to the temperature of an exothermic reaction?
Heat energy is transferred to the surroundings, causing the reaction mixture and its surroundings to become hotter.
