exoplanets Flashcards
to learn exoplanets
you cant find exoplanets without detecting them
what are the 5 types of exoplanet location?
Radial Velocity, Transit, Direct imaging, Gravity lensing, astrometry
But what are they!?
what is radial velocity
The star moves, ever so slightly, in a small circle or ellipse, responding to the gravitational tug of its planets this causes a doppler effect in light
what is transit?
When a planet eclipses between the observer and the star the light emitted from the star drops measurably
what is direct imaging
astronomers can take pictures of exoplanets by removing the glare from the stars they orbit.
guess what im going to ask
Gravitational lensing what is it?
light from a distant star is bent and warped by exoplanets and stars
what is astrometry
the doppler shift of a star can cause a star to wobble in relation to other stars in the sky
what is the goldilocks zone???
the zone of life where ice, snow, and steam turn into water (or the habitable zone)
hence the goldlocks since its not to cold and not too hot
what is the tempurature of the goldilocks zone
in kelvin
273-373K
some planets dont orbit stars? what do they orbit then?
galatic centre
sure the goldilocks zone is nice but what is the place where ice starts to freeze
Ice line
how do ocean planets form
Dust + gas accumulates beyond the frost line, and when the planet goes inward, the ice/frost melts
why do exoplanets tend not to form in older stellar populations
they have low metallicity making it hard for planets to form
the composition of what decides the compostion of planets?
The debris disk
