Exogenous Forces Flashcards
What are the three types of exogenous forces?
Wheathering, Erosion and Deposition
What are the three types of Wheathering that are present in the soil?
Physical, chemical and biogenic
What are some examples of physical and chemical wheathering?
Physical: Wind (abrasion), water (flovial), temperature (insulation/exfoliation), ice (glacial)
Chemical: Oxidation, Solution
How do rivers influence the environment?
Through sustained erosure of land by the speed of the river, as well as depositon of soil transported by the river
How do rivers transform over time?
They begin to meander, and form a type of slalom, and can eventually wrap around to create a piece of land surrounded by water
What can influence a rivers ability to erode and transport sediment?
The hight and altitude the water flows from, which can increase the velocity and therefore force of a river and its potential to carry sediment and erode land
Which types of valleys exist and how do rivers influence their creation?
narrwo and steep gorges or a v-shaped wide and shallow valley
What is the connection between particle size and flow speed?
The larger the particles the higher the flow speed
What are some factors that affect soil quality?
Wind, rain, chemical reactions, biological reactions, temperature
What is desertification?
Changes in the availability of water and the degredation of soil quality leading to an area turning into a desert
What is accomplished by building dry walls?
Providing a habitat for small animals and slwoing rain water
What is the Great Green Wall project?
A reaction against soil degredation by planting trees along the Sahel to prevent desertification and bring jobs to the region
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is an instant atmospheric condition
CLimate is a summary of atmospheric conditions in a climate zone over at least 30 years
What are some weather conditions?
atmospheric conditions during particular seasons
What are some climate elements?
Temperature, precipitation, wind, pressure, cloud coverage, humidity and more
What is teh greenhouse gas effect?
Some gases reflect radiation bouncing from the earths surface towards space and directs it back to the surface
What is radiation?
Energy emitted from the sun which is concentrated along the equator, observable in short or long wave form
What is the wind patter ntypical of the tropical zone?
The so-called Intertropical Convergence Zone
What are the types of wind and where do they dominate?
Easterlies dominate at the poles and in the tropics, Westerlies dominate at the mid-latitudes between the two
What are the trade winds and how do they influence the monsoon season?
The trade winds are the easterly winds blwoing around the equator that transport rain clouds generated yb heat coming from Australia and North America to the Indian Subcontinent
What is the impact of westerlies?
They transport warm water across the ocean to more remote areas
What is the water cycle?
The process by which water is sustainably found all across the earth. First, Water fall down in the form of rain, which collects into lakes or flows into the ground becoming ground water. The water on the surface evaporates and becomes water vapor, which rises and subsequently forms clouds, which promptly rain water right back down, restarting the cycle
