EXOGENIC Types of Rocks (Definition-Word) Flashcards
What is an Igneous Rock?
Formed when molten rocks cool down due to decrease in temperature. Hard and has no layers.
What are Metamorphic Rocks?
Formed when pre-existing rocks transform into new rocks due to increase in pressure and temperature
What are Sedimentary Rocks?
Formed with remains of pre-existing rocks and once living animals (sediment compaction). Crumbly and layered
What are extrusive rocks?
Type of igneous rocks that cools down faster and forms at the crust’s surface
What are intrusive rocks?
type of igneous rocks that cools down slower and forms when magma flows into underground chambers where it isn’t exposed to the surface’s atmosphere
What are foliated rocks?
type of metamorphic rocks that forms when pressure flattens or elongates materials within a rock, causing its formation to be aligned
What are non foliated rocks?
type of metamorphic rocks that doesn’t have a platy or sheet-like structure
What are clastic rocks?
type of sedimentary rocks which name is usually based on its grain size and is made up of pre existing rocks
What are Chemical sedimentary rocks?
type of sedimentary rocks which is formed through chemical precipitation
What is Chemical precipitation?
the process of water traveling through rocks then dissolves some of its materials then deposits it (takes it away from its source) as it evaporates.
What is an organic/biogenic sedimentary rock?
type of sedimentary rock which is formed of biogenic or organic matter (ex: fossils)
