Exodus Flashcards
Two ways in which God’s promise give Abraham and Sarah descendants is fulfilled in Exodus
God helps Israel leave Egypt and travel to the promised land.
Israel multiplies into a great nation
Why Exodus is the heart of the Old Testament
Without Exodus the Old Testament would collapse just likeNew Testament would collapse without the four Gospels
The primary task that God gives the people of Israel in Exodus
To live a new life guided buy the torah, or law that God gives them on mount Sinai
List and briefly describe three of the writing styles in Exodus
Lots of dialogue-especially between Moses and God
Action language-especially when God and pharaoh are locked in a battle of wills
Legal language-to explain the law that God wants Israel to follow
Why the book of Exodus really begins the last few chapters of Genesis
Jacob’s children had lots of kids (Genesis 1:7) in keeping with God’s command, in Genesis to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28)
How the book of Exodus linked to an already existing covenant
God remembers the covenant made with Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Jacob and Leah/Rebecca when God decides to free Israel from slavery
Explain how the people of Israel shift from master to master and from building to building
They become servants of God instead of slaves of pharaoh. They build a tabernacle for God instead of doing forced labor as builders for Pharaoh
Explain Pharaohs encounter with the midwives, how exodus reduces details to an absolute minimum
The text only mentions to midwives, although there must have been many more. The text also doesn’t say why pharaoh would be talking to two Jewish midwives
Explain into two or three sentences how the author of Exodus skillfully writes for both the first time and returning later
First time readers follow the author as he unfolds the story step-by-step.four people rereading the story the author constructs the narrative to make it entertaining for them.
Explain how Pharaoh is like many dictators today
He does evil in secret by telling the midwives to kill all the baby boys. Then he goes public in his abuse of power by ordering the baby boys to be thrown into the Nile
Why is it ironic that Moses is placed in a basket in the Nile River
Moses, in his basket is placed in the same river that is used to drown Hebrew baby boys
Why is it ironic that pharaohs daughter saves Moses
She doesn’t support her own father’s policy of genocide against Hebrew people
Meaning of the word “Tebah”
God will protect Moses and the little baby ark for the sake of Israel’s future just as he protected Noah in his big grown-up ark
